Meet Allie: The Boise-Area Jewelry Designer Who Started in Fashion, Not Diamonds

Ask most people what makes a good jeweler and they will talk about stones. Clarity, carat, cut. Certification. Those things matter, a lot. But they explain why a piece is valuable. They do not explain why a piece gets worn.

Before the diamonds, there was the fitting room

Allie holds a double bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising and business. After school she worked with several large designer brands and their showrooms, then spent several years as a menswear stylist at Nordstrom.

Think about what that job actually is. Day after day you stand next to a real person in front of a mirror and learn what works on them and what does not. You learn proportion. You learn that the piece someone says they want and the piece they will actually reach for on a Tuesday morning are frequently two different things.

You cannot get that from a gemology textbook. It is thousands of hours of watching how a piece of jewelry sits on human beings.

Then twelve years of gemology, under her father

Allie is a fifth-generation jeweler. The family trade line runs back to 1885, when her great-great-grandfather Isaac opened a jewelry store in Chicago. Her father, Perry Coles, has fifty years in gemology and trained in GIA’s first Santa Monica campus class.

She has spent twelve years apprenticing under him: stones, settings, metal behavior, and the antique eras — Georgian through Retro, pieces that most jewelers in this market never touch. She is GIA diamond certified in her own right.

So the fashion background is not a substitute for the technical one. It sits on top of it.

Designed in Meridian, made in Europe

Allie designs every piece in house. The making is done by a small group of European workshops led by a longtime partner in Italy! Artisans in the truest sense, working a craft that has been handed down rather than taught.

That split is deliberate. The person who knows you and your piece is the one drawing it, and the hands that build it do this and only this, all day, generation after generation. Before a piece ever reaches you, it has passed through skilled hands.

What that combination changes about your ring

Here is the practical difference. Most custom design consultations start with the stone: what shape, what size, what budget. Allie’s start with you.

What do you already wear every day? What did you buy once and never put on, and why? What does your hand look like, and what will this piece sit next to for the next forty years? Do you work with your hands? Do you take your rings off at night, or never?

Those questions sound soft. They are the reason a piece ends up in daily rotation instead of a drawer. They are also why she is very good at two specific jobs.

Heirloom redesign. Inherited stones carry meaning but rarely arrive in a setting anyone wants to wear now. Allie calls reworking them an elegant form of upcycling: the sentiment survives, the piece finally gets used. Men’s pieces. A designer who spent years as a menswear stylist reads men’s proportion instinctively. Bands, signets and everyday pieces get sized and weighted for the person, not pulled from a tray.

Does the designer actually matter?

If you searched “jewelry designer near me” from anywhere in the Treasure Valley, you probably got a list of stores. A store is not a designer. In many cases, the person who greets you is not the person who designs your piece, and may not be there in ten years when you bring it back.
