What Makes a Copper Canary Evaluation Different

Most people searching for a jewelry appraisal are really asking one question: what is this actually worth?

There's an important distinction that most jewelers don't explain upfront. A formal insurance appraisal gives you the retail replacement value — what it would cost to replace the piece new at a retail store. That number is useful for insurance purposes, but it's often significantly higher than what the piece would actually sell for in today's market.

At Copper Canary, we provide a fair market evaluation — an honest, real-world assessment of what your piece is worth based on current market conditions, craftsmanship, materials, gemstones, age, and condition. This is the number that actually matters if you're considering selling, trading, or simply want to know the true value of what you own.

Our evaluations are conducted by Perry, our in-house gemologist with over 50 years of experience in fine jewelry and antique pieces — not an automated tool, not a generalist, and not someone working on commission to buy your jewelry at the lowest possible price.

A Note on Insurance Appraisals

Copper Canary does not currently offer formal written appraisals for insurance purposes. If you need a certified insurance appraisal, we're happy to refer you to a trusted local appraiser in the Boise and Treasure Valley area.

What we do offer is something many people find even more useful: an honest, knowledgeable conversation about what your jewelry is actually worth in today's market — from someone who buys and sells fine jewelry every single day.

What to Expect During Your Evaluation

We currently accept walk-ins, but encourage an appointment

1. Schedule or Walk In We welcome walk-ins during business hours, but an appointment ensures our gemologist has dedicated time for your pieces. Call us at (208) 617-3577 or schedule online.

2. Bring Your Pieces Don't worry about cleaning or organizing beforehand. If you have a mix of fine and costume jewelry, bring it all — we'll help you sort through what you have. No preparation needed.

3. A Private, No-Pressure Assessment We have a private conference room where we assess your pieces away from the showroom floor. We understand that jewelry often comes with personal circumstances — inherited pieces, divorce, estate matters — and we treat every situation with discretion and respect.

4. Honest Answers We'll walk you through what we found: the age, authenticity, materials, and our honest assessment of fair market value. You'll leave knowing exactly what you have — with no obligation to do anything further.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the evaluation free?

Yes. There is no charge for our evaluation. If you choose to sell or trade your pieces with us, we make our offer at that time — but there is never any pressure or obligation.

How is this different from a pawn shop?

Pawn shops are in the business of short-term loans and quick resale. Copper Canary is a fine jewelry store specializing in antique and estate pieces. We purchase jewelry because we love it and know how to sell it to the right buyers — which means we can often offer significantly more than a pawn shop would.

Will you tell me if my jewelry isn't valuable?

Yes, always. We believe you deserve honest information, even when it's not what you were hoping to hear. Our reputation in the Treasure Valley is built on transparency, and we won't give you an inflated number just to get you in the door.

Do you accept lab-grown gemstones?

We only evaluate and purchase earth-mined gemstones or genuine antique synthetics. We can still assess the value of the metal setting for lab-grown pieces, but we are unable to purchase the stones themselves.

Do I need to be ready to sell?

Not at all. Many people come in simply to learn what they have. You're welcome to take our evaluation and use that information however you'd like.
